Manual moderation breaks at scale.
At 500 members, manual moderation is manageable. At 2,000 it is not. Spam bursts happened overnight when no staff were online. New members entered without any onboarding context. Rule violations were caught inconsistently.

Auto-moderation
Message rate limiting with configurable per-user thresholds. Banned word filters with regex support. Repeated-link detection. Violations auto-delete the message and log the event.
Staff alert system
When a violation is detected, the bot posts a detailed alert to a private staff channel: the message content, the member, timestamp, and violation type. Staff decide on follow-up action.
Welcome flow
New members receive an automated DM with server rules and a getting-started guide. The welcome channel gets a public greeting with a link to the pinned resources.
Role management
Slash commands let staff assign and remove roles without touching the Discord UI. The bot logs every role change with the staff member who triggered it.
Engagement tracking
Message counts and participation levels tracked in PostgreSQL. Staff dashboard shows most and least active members. Useful for identifying who to invite into premium tiers.
Admin slash commands
/warn, /mute, /kick, /ban, /stats all available to staff. Commands are permission-gated. Every action is logged with timestamp and executor.

The bot went live in week 6 and ran without incident through its first weekend - historically the highest-spam period. Three spam burst attempts were caught and muted automatically before any staff were online.
